Hello! Welcome to the Undergraduate Quants Online Resources website. Here you will find information about our research project, links to trial material, detailed documentation on how to download and use the material as well as the online learning resources themselves.

This project brings together researchers in Politics, Social Policy and Sociology to create online learning resources in quantitative methods. The project was funded by the ESRC (ES/Jo12025/1). The online learning materials may be used as a stand alone course, or teachers can pick and mix different modules to use as supplements to existing courses. There are 12 topics, each with self help and tutorial activities. The materials may be used in courses that use SPSS, or Stata or R.

Key topics include:

  • (Basic maths refresher)
  • Introduction
  • Univariate analysis
  • Associations between two varaibles
  • Associations for nominal and ordinal variables
  • Correlation and regression
  • Causality
  • Probability
  • Inference
  • Multiple Regression
  • Logistic Regression
  • Data Visualisation

Throughout, the data uses publicly available datasets so that students do not need to register with data archives. These include the European Social Survey and the World Development Indicators dataset. Students therefore gain experience analysing aggregate (state-level) and individual-level data.

History

In 2012 a team of 7 researchers at Edinburgh began developing online materials for undergraduate courses in quantitative methods. This followed several years of work developing blended learning materials that staff used in postgraduate courses.

The core academic team includes:

  • Ailsa Henderson, Principal Investigator (Politics & International Relations)
  • Ross Bond (Sociology)
  • Alison Koslowski (Social Policy)
  • Paul Norris (Social Policy)
  • Kate Orton Johnston (Sociology)
  • Michael Rosie (Sociology)
  • Andrew Thompson (Politics & International Relations)

Associated members include:

  • Jan Eichhorn (Social Policy)
  • Mor Kandlik Eltanani (Sociology)
  • John MacInnes (Sociology)
  • Anna Schneider (Sociology)

In 2013 we launched the first reworked version, employing it in a required quantitative methods course for 200 students. Since then it has been used either as the core material or supplementary material to various postgraduate and undergraduate courses and professional programmes. After each use we have updated the product to introduce possible improvements. The materials have since been used to teach approximately 900 students.

If you are interested in the product, the website has a taster version so that you can access the first two modules and see if this is something that you might like to use.

We have designed the material for free use in the UK and ask only that users
a) provide credit to the original creators when they use the materials
b) not employ the materials for commercial use.
